sort of cheating, but Anthem of the Sun is my hands down favorite. I just love the swirling psychedelia and densely layers sounds of that album. BFA and Wake of the Flood are very close seconds, though...

Another vote for Anthem of the Sun here. My hands-down favorite, too. After that, I'd say Aoxomoxoa and the first album. Haven't heard them in a long while; probably they pale now in comparison to all the live versions I've heard of tunes on those albums, but those were both early favorites, so they've definitely got my sentimental vote.

For me, it's Blues for Allah with Help>Marbles as a piece.

While not officially GD, "Garcia" is a close 2nd.

the wonderful thing about anthem is they ARE the live versions! listen to 2/14 or 3/17/68, for example, and you can distinctly hear the bits of those performances that were used in the recording. AOTS is like a little bit of "greatest hits" of those winter '68 shows, with studio trickery thrown in for good measure...

Isn't there some from 2/23, too? I gather there's also an awful lot of studio messing-around ... combining and layering or whatever (I'm definitely not a techie!) ... apparently drove the producer nuts. Worth it, though, IMO.

there is, though i can't quite pin down what parts they used...i'd have to go back and hear those shows again.

the ones i cited were ones where i distinctly remember hearing parts that are clearly used during lengthy passages of the album (2/14 - almost all of Alligator and parts of The Other One and New Potato; 3/17 the 1st half of the jam during New Potato). i know there is quite a bit of 1/20 used, too. of course there are bits from all these shows that were used, and i'm sure if you listened and compared carefully could hear more.

the performances that were used on AOTS include:
11/10-11/67, 1/20/68, 1/22-23/68, 2/2-3/68, 2/14/68, 2/22-24/68, 3/15-17/68 and 3/29-31/68.

aoxo is also still a favorite for me...i think the studio versions are rather interesting (Mountains of the Moon for example), and that Cosmic Charlie is by far the best version...have you ever stumbled upon this?
